Max Verstappen scored his second victory of the year for Red Bull in a chaotic German Grand Prix at Hockenheim.

Verstappen, a 3-1 chance for the victory, beat home hero Sebastian Vettel to the flag by 7.3 seconds. The Ferrari driver had started 20th and last after failing to complete a timed lap in qualifying.

Daniil Kvyat completed the podium, having started a 500-1 chance to reach the rostrum for Toro Rosso.

There's nothing like a drop of rain to liven up a Formula One race and intermittent showers throughout the afternoon caught out several drivers and saw the safety car deployed six times.

Charles Leclerc was the first high-profile name to fall foul of conditions. The Ferrari driver, who started tenth after mechanical issues in qualifying, had been favourite for pole position and was looming behind the leaders when he slid off the track and into the barriers.

Lewis Hamilton, feeling under the weather, led for the first half of the race but hit the same barrier as Leclerc soon afterwards. The world championship leader was able to continue but picked up a penalty for an improper pit entry, suffered a very slow pitstop and finished 11th.

To compound Mercedes' misery Valtteri Bottas's race ended in the wall late on when he looked set to finish second.

Hamilton remains 39 points ahead of Bottas in the championship and the Briton is still 1-33 to wrap up his sixth title this year.

But Verstappen was cut to 25-1 from 70-1 after moving to within 23 points of Bottas in second, the Dutchman having won two of the last three races.
