Dutch Grand Prix preview

Life’s a beach for world championship leader Max Verstappen right now after he snatched pole position from under the noses of Ferrari on the Netherlands coast for his home Grand Prix.

Just 0.021 seconds - the smallest pole margin of the season - separated Verstappen from Charles Leclerc in second as the Red Bull driver, who holds a 93-point lead in the drivers' standings, continues to lord it over the rest of the grid.

Bookmakers have made Verstappen 4-9 to chalk up his tenth win of the season on home soil but it's been far from a trouble-free weekend for Red Bull, who had issues in practice on Friday.

Verstappen's price also doesn't reflect how close qualifying was with less than a second covering the top seven drivers.

Although overtaking is not easy at Zandvoort, a repeat of last year’s lights-to-flag Dutch Grand Prix triumph is unlikely to come easy to Verstappen and Ferrari’s claims shouldn’t be so easily dismissed.

Ferrari have had the quicker car for most of the weekend with Leclerc setting the pace in second and third practice, and the Monegasque driver was convinced it was only a mistake on his last flying lap that cost him pole.

Both Scuderias were quicker down the straights than Verstappen on Saturday and although punters will justifiably have a bit of trepidation in trusting the Italians given their poor race record, there’s enough juice in Leclerc’s price to get behind him to secure his first win since Austria.

Lando Norris’s papaya McLaren looks right at home among the sea of orange at Zandvoort and he is worth chancing to get among the top six on race day after qualifying in seventh.

Damage to Norris’s floor in the second part of qualifying denied him the chance to mix it with the Red Bull and Ferraris in Q3, but the signs are positive for a strong race showing with McLaren just ahead of Mercedes in race simulations on Friday.

The Brit endured a frustrating Belgian Grand Prix but has four top-six finishes to his name this year, strung together three consecutive seventh places before Spa and has gone well at this track in the past in F3.
