Marc Marquez was probably helped by the cancellation of last month's British Grand Prix due to the weather, and the four-time world champion is an attractive price to press his advantage by taking pole position for this weekend's San Marino Grand Prix.

Jorge Lorenzo would have started from pole at Silverstone had the race taken place, as Ducati's purple patch continued. The Spaniard had won the previous race in Austria to move up to third in the standings, albeit 71 points behind pacesetter Marquez.

Lorenzo is second favourite to go fastest in qualifying at Misano behind his teammate Andrea Dovizioso.

Dovi has set only one pole position this season, but was fastest in Friday's practice with Lorenzo second.

Marquez ended the day fifth fastest, but had led for much of the afternoon session.

The Honda rider has been on pole for three of the last five races and has been the most consistent qualifier with five front-row starts in the last six races, not counting Silverstone.

Britain's Cal Crutchlow ended practice day third, just 0.187 seconds off Dovizioso's pace.

Maverick Vinales finished the day a promising fourth for the up-and-down Yamaha works team.
