Betting preview

The women's Alpine slalom was won by odds-on favourite Petra Vlhova but the men's race is one of the most open betting heats of the whole 2022 Winter Olympics.

It's 5-1 the field for Olympic Alpine skiing's most technical event, which sees the racers tackle a twisty course twice - with the gates arranged differently each time - and the fastest combined time over the two runs takes gold.

The World Cup tour has produced a completely crazy men's slalom season, with six different winners in the six races so far while 14 different skiers have stood on the podium.

With record-breakers, first-time winners and certain victories thrown away within the shadow of the finishing arch we really have seen it all, and there's no reason to expect less drama in China.

Britain's Dave Ryding made history as the first British skier to win a World Cup Alpine ski race with his victory at Kitzbuhel last month, when he also became the oldest winner of a World Cup slalom at 35.

Ryding was an 80-1 chance that day and, having been in with a shout of a podium at a couple of other races this season, he has as good a chance as any of picking up a medal.

Johannes Strolz took his maiden World Cup win at Adelboden last month in a race for which he was not even seeded to qualify for the second run. However, that success got him into the Austrian Olympic team and he justified his selection by taking gold in the combined, emulating his father's achievement in 1988.

But Strolz has failed to finish four of the six World Cup slaloms this year, and his compatriot Manuel Feller looks the best bet.

Feller is one of the few skiers to have made the podium twice this season, and he has a second, third and fourth place from his last three World Cup slalom starts.

American-born Norwegian Atle Lie McGrath missed out by just 0.03sec in the last World Cup race before the Olympics, and he could prove a live outsider.
