Betting preview

Frenchman Quentin Fillon Maillet won gold in the individual biathlon on Tuesday morning but the betting suggests he will play second fiddle to Norwegian Johannes Thingnes Boe in the 10km sprint, which takes place at 9am UK & Ireland time on Saturday.

Biathlon features skiing and shooting with the 10km sprint distance skied over three laps. Each competitor shoots twice for a total of ten shots and each miss results in a 150-metre penalty, which must be skied in a loop.

Neither of the market-leaders have dominated the discipline so there looks to be some potential for an upset, and Sebastian Samuelsson is the tentative selection.

The Swede leads the World Cup standings and defeated Fillon Maillet and Boe in back-to-back sprint events in Ostersund at the start of the season. If he shoots better - three penalties cost him in the individual - he is in with a chance of gold.

On Friday, Dutch short track queen Suzanne Schulting looks set to justify favouritism in the women's 1,000m speed skating, which starts with the quarter-finals at 11am UK & Ireland time.

Odds of 5-4 come with risks attached in the rough-and-tumble world of short track but Schulting has dominated at this distance since she won Olympic gold in Pyeongchang four years ago.

The 24-year-old, since crowned a double world champion in the 1,000m, was able to cruise through her heat on Wednesday and will attempt to dictate from the front in her bid for Beijing glory.
