World number one Jon Rahm returns to action seeking to become Memphis king

Golf punters have three tournaments to consider this week as there is a late surge of pre-Major action – one World Golf Championship shootout taking centre stage and a secondary event on both the European Tour and PGA.

World number one Jon Rahm headlines the WGC field, with Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas also in attendance. Dustin Johnson, despite withdrawing from the 3M Open after round one last week citing a back injury, is also in the field for TPC Southwind, Memphis.

The PGA Tour is also staging the Barracuda Championship, a low-key gathering on the Old Greenwood track at Tahoe Mountain Club, Truckee, California. The Barracuda uses a Modified Stableford scoring system.

Michael Thompson, the 125-1 winner of the 3M Open, was due to be in the Barracuda field, but his TPC Twin Cities success meant qualification for WGC-St Jude Invitational. Thompson won by two shots from Adam Long in a tournament where the big names badly flopped.

The UK Swing of the European Tour continues with the Hero Open from the Forest of Arden, Birmingham. Renato Paratore was the 50-1 winner of the British Masters on Saturday. After an unusual fortnight, the Tour resumes normal service this week with a Thursday start and Sunday finish.

Thorbjorn Olesen, who due to an “unprecedented delay in court proceedings” had his Tour suspension lifted at the start of this month, will compete for the first time in a year. Olesen's court case regarding an alleged incident on a flight from Nashville to London last July, has been pushed back to December.
