Lanto Griffin won the Houston Open on Sunday night, the PGA Tour maiden holing an enormous birdie putt at the 17th hole, then following up with a gutsy par at the difficult 18th to complete a one-shot victory in the low-grade Texas gathering.

Griffin, a best-price 60-1 ante-post, battled with fellow maidens Mark Hubbard and Scott Harrington for the title. Hubbard carded a one-over-par back-nine to end up a shot shy, while Harrington three-putted the 17th hole to suffer the same fate.

Bookmakers were thrilled to see the favourites in both of last week's tournaments – Paul Casey in the Italian Open and Henrik Stenson in Houston – miss the cut. Bernd Wiesberger was the 35-1 winner in Italy.

This week the European Tour action is the French Open in Paris, while the PGA Tour heads overseas for the CJ Cup at Nine Bridges in Korea, where world number one Brooks Koepka will be defending his title.
