Eight players have been chalked up between 16-1 and 25-1 for an ultra-competitive Wyndham Championship - the last chance PGA Tour stars get to qualify for the FedEx Cup playoffs.

The top 125 in the FedEx Cup standings after the Wyndham Championship will qualify for next week's FedEx St Jude, with the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship following soon after. The FedEx Cup winner gets $18m.

Steve Palmer's top tip

Si Woo Kim 25-1

A fourth PGA Tour title could be coming on Sunday for a former prodigy who won the Players Championship by three shots when he was just 21 years of age. When Si Woo Kim produced that Sawgrass masterclass, he seemed set for superstardom, so three victories in six years is somewhat disappointing.

Injuries have not helped Kim in his quest to take his career to the next level, but he appears healthy at the moment, following 15th place in the Open Championship at St Andrews with 14th spot in the Rocket Mortgage Classic on Sunday.

Given Kim's love affair with Sedgefield Country Club, it is reasonable to expect this mercurial genius to contend strongly. His maiden PGA Tour title came in the 2016 Wyndham, then he was fifth in 2019, third in 2020, before losing in a six-man playoff last year.

Kim putted well in the Rocket Mortgage Classic - he can get frustrated with flat-stick in hand but will have been thrilled with his dancefloor form in Detroit - and a second Wyndham success seems entirely feasible this week.

Next best bet

Kevin Kisner 35-1

Last week Kevin Kisner was a little off from tee to green, and putted poorly by his high standards, but he could easily bounce back from his Rocket Mortgage Classic flop by retaining his Wyndham Championship trophy.

Kisner held his nerve in the six-man playoff last year, making a decisive birdie at the second extra hole, and this venue is ideal for him. The Carolinian can boast Sedgefield form figures of 8-10-42-3-1 from his last five visits.

The four-time PGA Tour champion got nothing going in Detroit last week, but he was sixth in the Travelers Championship in June and 21st in the Open last month, so his A-game is clearly close.

Other selection

Christiaan Bezuidenhout 55-1

Complete a three-pronged Wyndham attack with Christiaan Bezuidenhout - a PGA Tour maiden who appears to have settled into Stateside life and should be making a breakthrough soon.

Bezuidenhout, an accurate player blessed with great touch on and around the greens, is well suited to the Sedgefield assignment. He opened with a 71 on his debut, but finished strongly for 37th place, and he returns for his second spin carrying much more self-belief.

The South African has won three times on the DP World Tour and in his last Stateside start he tied for second place in the John Deere Classic, firing a pair of weekend 66s. Expect Bezuidenhout to thrive in another low-scoring affair this week.

Players to note

Shane Lowry
The Irishman must be desperate for a 2022 victory, having played consistently well without lifting any silverware. Sedgefield is a great fit.

Webb Simpson
The regular Wyndham contender relishes the Sedgefield set-up and will expect to be in the mix again in his home state.

JT Poston
Another Carolinian dangerman. His maiden PGA Tour victory came in the 2019 Wyndham and his second came last month in the John Deere Classic.

Tyrrell Hatton
The Englishman should score well at Sedgefield if his attitude is right. A share of 11th place in the Open was encouraging for his followers.

Course type Parkland

Course overview Donald Ross created this layout in 1926 and it was redesigned by Kris Spence in 2007. Sedgefield Country Club has hosted this tournament from 2008 onwards. Modern professionals have found birdies easy to come by in the Wyndham, with winning scores of 21 under par or better in five of the last six years. The greens were switched to Champion Bermuda grass for the 2012 event in an effort to make them harder and faster. They are small, undulating and typically slope from back to front, with plenty of run-off areas around them, so quality scrambling is required. The 507-yard par-four 18th and 501-yard par-four 14th are the most difficult holes, while the 547-yard 15th and the 529-yard fifth (the only par-fives on the course) are the easiest

Story of last year Kevin Kisner emerged triumphant from a six-man playoff, defeating Branden Grace, Si Woo Kim, Kevin Na, Adam Scott and Roger Sloan

Weather forecast Sunny and warm for the most part (peaking at 31C), with gentle breezes and a thunderstorm threat on Friday and Sunday

Type of player suited to the challenge There are five holes at Sedgefield which fall into the category of difficult – the par-fours at 11, 14 and 18, and the two long par-threes (seven and 12) – but the rest of the track is straightforward. The champion is likely to have spent four days regularly rolling in birdie putts
