Luke Donald, the new European Ryder Cup captain, gets an immediate chance to run the rule over a couple of candidates for his team in the first round of the Wyndham Championship - he is part of an all-English threeball alongside Tyrrell Hatton and Justin Rose.

That morning meeting is part of a decent early wave, with Will Zalatoris, Sungjae Im and JT Poston also in the first half of the Sedgefield Country Club draw. Shane Lowry and Billy Horschel are out much later in the day.

Hatton is the most appealing threeball option of the day. Donald has had a lot on his plate off the course, stepping in as a Ryder Cup replacement for Henrik Stenson after the Swede joined LIV Golf, and the world number 523 would be the first to admit he is a pale shadow of his former self.

Rose had a back injury so severe last month that it forced him to withdraw from the Open Championship at St Andrews. Having missed an event as prestigious as that - and having not been seen in action since - Rose arrives at Sedgefield under an injury cloud.

Hatton, who finished 24th in the Scottish Open before 11th place in the Open, seems by far the most likely to hit the ground running in the 12.34pm contest.
