Story so far

Talor Gooch finished the third round of the RSM Classic strongly to forge a three-shot lead going into Sunday at the Seaside Course, Sea Island, Georgia.

Gooch, an ante-post 40-1 chance seeking his maiden PGA Tour title, started the weekend one shot clear and a 7-2 chance for victory. He has shortened to 10-11 after another 18 holes.

Seamus Power and Sebastian Munoz are tied for second spot, with regular RSM Classic contender Webb Simpson lurking dangerously in a share of eighth. Pre-tournament favourite, Scottie Scheffler, is tied for 63rd place, 15 shots adrift.

A clear final day, with moderate breezes and temperatures around 20C, is forecast. The final threeball of Gooch, Power and Munoz is scheduled to tee off at 4.15pm UK and Ireland time.

Final-round preview

Talor Gooch has been in good form on the PGA Tour, regularly appearing on leaderboards over the last couple of months, finishing fourth in the Fortinet Championship and fifth in the CJ Cup.

Gooch was in the final twoball of the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba at the start of this month and he closed with a 74 to plummet to 11th place. Viktor Hovland was his partner that day and today's mission is a less daunting task, but nerves obviously seem set to play a significant part in the closing round of Gooch.

The 30-year-old Oklahoman has a nice cushion between himself and the chasing pack, but he makes no appeal at 10-11 to get the job done. Sunday pressure could easily unsettle the maiden.

The tactic in Racing Post Sport's Saturday morning preview was to support Seamus Power and Mackenzie Hughes - and they still seem the two men most likely to upset Gooch. Power, advised at 14-1 yesterday, has shortened to 6-1 and is the recommendation for punters wanting to play prior to round four.

Power, Hughes, Webb Simpson and Cameron Smith may be the quartet to conjure the finishing flourish to trouble Gooch. Hughes is a former RSM champion, Simpson nearly always plays well at the Seaside Course, while Smith is well suited to the assignment and has made a decent course debut.

From five behind (Hughes), six (Simpson) and seven (Smith), this trio probably need some help from Gooch. From just three behind, Power will know he can force his way into the trophy hunt even if the leader shows some resilience.

Power is enjoying the best season of his career. He won his maiden PGA Tour title in the Barbasol Championship in July and has produced nine top-20 finishes, moving up to 89th in the world rankings. Great work around the greens has been the catalyst for this rise - and Power tops the scrambling stats in the RSM this week.

If Power keeps getting up and down from everywhere, Gooch will probably struggle to repel the Irishman. Hughes, Simpson and Smith can run into the places. Simpson (3.53pm) and Smith (3.31pm) can boss their threeballs.
