Steve Palmer's top tip
Rory McIlroy to win FedEx Cup 11-2
Every bookmaker used to have the PGA Tour Money List and the Race to Dubai priced up in full at this time of the year, allowing punters to have a season-long interest, culminating in the Tour Championship at the end of August and the DP World Tour Championship in the middle of November.
The layers are less keen to get involved this time, though, and prices are thin on the ground. Bookmakers will probably cite concerns over LIV Golf as the reason for their inaction, but the rules are clear at the moment - no LIV golfer can win the PGA Tour Money List or the DP World Tour Rankings.
As things stand, even if Cameron Smith won every Major, he would gain no dollar officially counting towards the PGA Tour Money List and no DP World Tour Rankings points. A February hearing will decide the future participation of LIV golfers on the DP World Tour, but there are no court proceedings relating to the PGA Tour taking place until autumn at the earliest.
Even so, most bookmakers are cagey but bet365 are running a traditional PGA Tour Money List market, while Betfair and Paddy Power have prices for the FedEx Cup.
The best tactic may be to spread your stakes between the two markets, with the 11-2 on offer about Rory McIlroy winning the FedEx Cup slightly preferred to the 23-10 for the Money List.
McIlroy is not just the world number one - he is threatening to become a dominant force. In an era when nobody has been able to take a stranglehold on top spot in the rankings, there is a feeling that a 33-year-old McIlroy could be about to do so. BoyleSports offer 13-8 that he is world number one at the end of 2023 - a perfectly fair offer.
With every department of his game in solid order, McIlroy finished in the top four in his final six tournaments of this year. That streak started with victory in the Tour Championship - and it is easy to imagine a successful title defence at East Lake in August.
McIlroy managed to win the FedEx Cup this year despite starting the decisive Tour Championship with a six-shot handicap deficit. Rounds of 67, 67, 63 and 66 saw him reel in Scottie Scheffler and lift the FedEx Cup for a record-breaking third time.
McIlroy has not won the Money List since 2014, but his hat-trick of FedEx Cups have come in the last six years. His affection for East Lake is obvious and he nearly always makes an impact there. With FedEx Cup each-way terms of a fifth the odds, the first three places, getting on early could pay dividends.
Tying up funds for the best part of eight months may not appeal to many, but the chance to cover the win part of the wager with the 11-10 place odds could look fantastic business come the Tour Championship. If McIlroy takes pole position into the Tour Championship, getting the two-shot handicap start, he will not be much bigger than that for the Cup.
Next best bet
Tony Finau to win PGA Tour Money List 22-1
Making significant improvements in any walk of life at the age of 33 is unusual, but Tony Finau has stepped up a level in the last few months and will start the new year bursting with confidence.
Finau has become much straighter from tee to green, as well as finally finding some consistency with putter in hand, turning into a much more complete player. In the last six months, he has won three PGA Tour titles, all by convincing margins.
One of that trio of titles counts towards the 2023 PGA Tour Money List - Finau will start the new year with $1,512,000 already on the board - and the Utah giant should be a leading contender for the Money List crown.
Banking juicy cheques in the Majors is crucial to money-list success and Finau has already proved himself in the most prestigious arenas. His Majors form is outstanding for a player who is yet to win one of them, with ten top-tens from 26 starts, including third place in the 2019 Open.
With a top-five finish to his name in each of the Majors, Finau is equipped to be a threat in all four of 2023's biggest events. Each-way terms of a quarter the odds, the first three places are available for the Money List.
Other selection
Collin Morikawa to win PGA Tour Money List 55-1
The final recommendation is on offer at a bigger price for the PGA Tour Money List than Taylor Montgomery. The tip is the same odds as Keegan Bradley and is only a shade shorter than Russell Henley. Collin Morikawa is in a different league to that trio and deserves more respect in the market.
Morikawa was not happy with how 2022 went, but that is because his standards became extremely high extremely quickly. The Californian ace achieved so much as soon as he turned pro, winning both the US PGA and the Open Championship on his debut.
Morikawa was winless in 2022 but it would be foolish to expect that drought to continue for much longer. The magnificent approach-play which made him a superstar has returned in the last few weeks and the recently married 25-year-old looks likely to start 2023 with a bang.
