Story so far

Seamus Power has forged a five-shot lead at the halfway stage of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am - the Irishman reaching 16 under par through 36 holes - shortening from 30-1 to even-money in the outright betting.

Power, who won his maiden PGA Tour title last summer in the low-grade Barbasol Championship, is seeking a second victory at a much more prestigious venue. The foundation of his Pro-Am challenge was laid in a Thursday 64 at Spyglass Hill - the most difficult of the three courses used for this tournament.

Power followed up with another 64 - at Pebble Beach - so he faces the easiest of the trio in round three today. Power will expect to advance his score at Monterey Peninsula, before returning to Pebble Beach for tomorrow's final round.

Patrick Cantlay and Andrew Putnam, second and third in the outright betting heading into the weekend, have also got Spyglass Hill out of the way. Tom Hoge, Adam Svensson and Austin Smotherman all tee up at Spyglass Hill in round three.

Third-round preview

Seamus Power is threatening to ruin an otherwise excellent pre-tournament book for Racing Post Sport followers - and some cover on the consistent Irishman may be sensible heading into the weekend.

A three-pronged Pebble attack on Patrick Cantlay at 8-1, Maverick McNealy at 28-1 and Andrew Putnam at 90-1 has shown early promise. McNealy has surely run his race, sharing 69th place at two under par, but Cantlay and Putnam seem to men most likely to catch pacesetting Power.

Power has obviously got so far ahead that only even-money is on offer, but punters with decent investments in Cantlay and Putnam may at least choose to cover their stake money on Power.

Matthias Schwab, who carded a 62 at Pebble Beach yesterday and should also enjoy himself at Monterey Peninsula today, is also worth considering at 28-1. Jason Day has Spyglass to come on Saturday.

Putnam is a surprisingly big price at 4-5 to win his third-round twoball against veteran Bo Van Pelt (5.58pm UK and Ireland time), while Justin Rose seems worth backing at 10-11 for top Englishman honours. Rose has a weekend at Pebble Beach to look forward to, while Matthew Fitzpatrick must negotiate the more difficult Spyglass Hill on Saturday. Rose from one shot behind may have the edge going into Sunday.

Another calm, sunny day is forecast for the iconic California venue. Power has set a new 36-hole scoring record for this event. He is scheduled to tee off at 6.09pm UK and Ireland time.
