Preview

Ryan Fox continued the best season of his career by opening up with an eight-under-par 64 at Gary Player Country Club in the Nedbank Challenge.

The New Zealander, a pre-tournament 18-1 chance, is a general 9-4 favourite heading into round two, having torched his closing nine in seven under par on Thursday.

The Nedbank competitors were greeted by soft conditions - and shorter rough than usual at this famous venue - and powerhouse Fox made merry. He was level par through eight holes before stepping up a gear.

Three players were ahead of Fox in the ante-post betting - Tommy Fleetwood, Thomas Detry and Jordan Smith. Detry (one over par) and Smith (three over) have given themselves a lot of catching up to do, but Fleetwood (two under) is only six shots behind. The pre-tournament 10-1 favourite has drifted to 12-1.

The players go out in leaderboard order for round two, meaning Fox, Luke Donald and Guido Migliozzi comprise the 8.45am final group. Pre-tournament 200-1 chance Donald will do well to keep pace with two DP World Tour powerhouses.

Migliozzi at 9-5 is a tempting option for second-round threeball punters, but preference is for Min Woo Lee, Lucas Herbert and Rasmus Hojgaard in the three preceding groups.

Gary Player Country Club is setting up better than ever for big-hitters, with moisture in the soil and the rough down, and Lee, Herbert and Hojgaard can take full advantage. All three are up against a pair of weaker drivers in round two, so the attacking youngsters can take charge.
