Jeff Winther regained his Mallorca Open lead in style on Saturday, carding his second 62 of the week to go two shots clear of the field at Santa Ponsa.

Winther, an ante-post 80-1 chance, fired a Thursday 62 to become 9-1 favourite, but a Friday 71 saw him swamped. Three closing birdies to complete a bogey-free third round put the Dane back in pole position.

Winther is a 33-year-old maiden who has never even held silverware aloft on the European Tour, but he is only a shade of odds-against for Mallorca glory.

Jorge Campillo is alone in second place - one of three Spaniards in the top five of the leaderboard. Bryce Easton, three shots clear at the halfway stage of the event, has dropped into a share of sixth.

Final-round preview

Bryce Easton showed in round three how quickly fortunes can change at Santa Ponsa - his three-shot lead disappeared in a flash - and Jeff Winther looks an awful price going into the final chapter of the Mallorca Open.

Winther, a downbeat character who struggles to look enthusiastic about life even when he is putting the finishing touches to rounds of 62, has failed to win a main-tour title. If he was a spring chicken still learning the ropes, that would be of no concern, but he is 33-year-old ranked 307th in the world.

Expect a jittery final-round performance from the leader and the tournament to remain wide open throughout.

Jorge Campillo is clearly comfortable in this grade. He made no impact in the Spanish Open and the Andalucia Masters, but the weekened Mallorca field appears to have galvanised the Caceras man and he was solid throughout round three.

Campillo, a two-time European Tour champion, is far more appealing than Winther at a much bigger price.

Sebastian Soderberg, who blew a golden winning chance at Valderrama last week, has found form in grand style. The Swede, Crans champion in 2019, must be respected. Alvaro Quiros, who has freed his mind of technical concerns, is also enjoying a resurgence. Quiros, playing slightly more conservatively than in the past and keeping his composure well, is winless since 2017 but has a golden opportunity here.

Pep Angles is a maiden who has struggled to keep tension from his swing when on European Tour leaderboards. Matti Schmid appeals much more from one shot further behind. The German rookie is so strong from tee to green that he sets up countless birdie chances.
A sunny day with gentle breezes is forecast for Sunday. Campillo, Soderberg, Quiros and Schmid may be the quartet who end up battling for the trophy over the final few holes.

With Campillo and Soderberg facing the pressure of teeing up in the final group, and Quiros 149th in the Race to Dubai and playing for his European Tour card, backing the player at the biggest price - Matti Schmid - is the most appealing option of all.

Schmid is on course to claim a Tour card and the 23-year-old German knows his future is bright whatever happens this year. From five shots behind an edgy frontrunner, Schmid seems well capable of firing something in the low-60s and threatening the silverware.

The final threeball of Winther, Campillo and Soderberg tees off at 11.30am UK and Ireland time, just as Sky's live coverage comes on air.
