Matt Wallace three-putted the first extra playoff hole of the European Masters on Sunday - a meek surrender to Thriston Lawrence - and the Englishman is hoping to bounce back from that disappointment as favourite for this week's Made In HimmerLand.

Wallace's last DP World Tour success came in the 2018 Made In Denmark - this tournament's original name - but that was staged at Silkeborg Ry. If Wallace is going to justify market leadership this week, he must win at HimmerLand for the first time.

Wallace, who was tenth in the Rocket Mortgage Classic on the PGA Tour at the end of July, seems an obvious runner, but can be left alone at the price, while Lawrence is making his course debut. Preference is for a pair of home hopes at superior odds.

Steve Palmer's top tip

Marcus Helligkilde 40-1

The early spotlight will inevitably fall on the hyped-up Hojgaard brothers, former Ryder Cup star Thorbjorn Olesen, and Danish golfing legend Thomas Bjorn. The Danes come out in hordes for this event and will be concentrating on cheering the locals lads, but one less heralded home hope may emerge as their trump card.

Marcus Helligkilde will start the week under the radar - he is yet to become a household name in Denmark - but come Sunday the 25-year-old could be the centre of attention.

Helligkilde kickstarted his career on the Nordic Golf League circuit, winning three times, then he quickly rattled off a hat-trick of victories on the Challenge Tour last year. This is a prolific champion in the lower grades, who has looked comfortable since promotion to the DP World Tour.

Helligkilde was 12th in the Dutch Open last year, but made a quiet start to 2022 as he adjusted to new clubs, having signed for TaylorMade. A tie for 12th in the Qatar Masters at the end of March got him going again, followed by an impressive fortnight Stateside in July when he finished eighth in the Barbasol Championship and 13th in the Barracuda Championship.

Fourth place in the ISPS Handa World Invitational in the middle of August provided further encouragement, then he bounced back well from an over-par first round on his Crans debut last week, finishing the event in 29th spot.

This power-packed player enjoys the exposed HimmerLand layout and he finished fifth in a Nordic Golf League event there in 2018, which had two of the three rounds at HimmerLand. Helligkilde made his DP World Tour debut at HimmerLand last year and closed with a 64 for 25th place. He was a Challenge Tour maiden ranked 347th in the world for that event, but has returned this week with much more self-belief.

Next best bet

Niklas Norgaard Moller 70-1

A Danish one-two could be in the offing this week, with Niklas Norgaard Moller well capable of bringing home the bacon. Moller, who turned 30 in May, is a Copenhagen man who has played his best golf in Denmark. He has won three times on the Nordic Golf League - all in his homeland.

One of those victories came at the 2019 Race To HimmerLand - an event for which two of the three rounds are staged at this week's venue. And in last year's Made In HimmerLand, Moller carded four rounds in the 60s for eighth place, so he is clearly comfortable on this terrain.

The powerhouse earned promotion to the DP World Tour at the Challenge Tour Grand Final in November, and he has looked comfortable on the main circuit, finishing tenth in the European Open in June, then ninth in the Scandinavian Mixed and 27th in the Barbasol Championship.

Last week, Moller fired a spectacular second-round 61 at Crans-sur-Sierre, and this birdie machine may have peaked at the perfect time to dazzle family and friends at HimmerLand.

Players to note

JB Hansen
The big-hitting Dane won the Challenge Tour event at HimmerLand in 2018 and 14th place at Crans last week was a timely return to form.

Adri Arnaus
The highest-ranked player in the field and a danger to all. The Catalunya Championship winner tied for ninth at Crans on Sunday.

Romain Langasque
Third place in the 2019 Made In Denmark marks the moody Frenchman down as a threat in a wide-open event.

Oliver Hundeboll
The Danish youngster impressed in the Hero Open at the end of July, finishing fifth, and he could build on some bright Challenge Tour form by contending at HimmerLand.

Lucas Bjerregaard
The sweet-swinging Dane has been showing signs of life, including third place at Celtic Manor, and the HimmerLand mission will appeal to him.

George Coetzee
The porky Pretorian, a recent winner on the Sunshine Tour, saw his mate Thriston Lawrence win the European Masters on Sunday and could follow his lead.

Course type Parkland

Course overview The European Tour moved to uncharted territory in 2014 for the inaugural Made In Denmark event and HimmerLand hosted from then through 2017. After one year elsewhere (Silkeborg Ry), HimmerLand (which hosted the 2018 Made in Denmark Challenge on the Challenge Tour) resumed European Tour duties in 2019. The 2020 edition was cancelled due to coronavirus. Thomas Bjorn won the 1995 Himmerland Open at this venue, a Challenge Tour gathering, but the course was extensively redesigned by Philip Spogaard in 2012, and bears little resemblance to its late-90s shape. It is an exposed, undulating layout, which has greens full of slope. The giant par-five 11th hole is 645 yards long

Story of last year Bernd Wiesberger destroyed the field by five shots, leaving Guido Migliozzi a distant runner-up

Weather forecast A mixture of sunshine and clouds, with temperatures peaking at 20C, and light to moderate breezes

Type of player suited to the challenge The last four HimmerLand winners were big hitters (Thomas Pieters, Julien Suri and Bernd Wiesberger twice), and the Challenge Tour event there went to the equally long JB Hansen, so it is clear the short resort course can be overwhelmed by power

Key attribute Power

Spotlight insight A Brit has failed to finish in the top two in only one of the seven Made In HimmerLands
