Day-three preview

Brendan Steele leads the Honda Classic by a shot going into the weekend at PGA National, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, having reached five under par through two rounds.

Steele, a 125-1 chance ante-post, found water at his final hole of the second round, closing with a bogey six, but his 67 was still enough for the Californian to become the halfway pacesetter.

Steele blew a golden chance of victory in the Sony Open, finishing weakly before losing the Sony Open in a playoff, and he can be backed at 10-1 to make the Honda his fourth PGA Tour title.
Tommy Fleetwood and Gary Woodland are jostling for Honda favouritism around the 6-1 mark, both lurking just behind Steele.

Fleetwood will be kicking himself for three-putting the final green in round two, but a 68 left him only three shots off the pace, and his driving has been magnificent.

Woodland has missed three putts of five feet or shorter over the first two days, but outstanding ball-striking means he takes only a two-shot deficit into the weekend. From tee-to-green, particularly on approach, the Kansas man has been spectacularly good.

If Fleetwood continues to drive his ball with such authority and Woodland continues to produce laserlike iron-shots, both should be contending down the stretch on Sunday. Cold putters have been holding them back, but the ball-striking brilliance is more important on a danger-strewn course which is drying out in the Florida sunshine.

Outright punters are advised to concentrate on Fleetwood and Woodland, with Shane Lowry, Sungjae Im and Daniel Berger nominated as their main threats.

Third-round twoball punters should consider recent Abu Dhabi champion, Lee Westwood, who should be much more comfortable than compatriot Luke Donald in the penultimate match (6.35pm UK and Ireland time). The ball-striking of Westwood seems much more likely to hold up under pressure than that of Donald, who has slipped to 456th in the world rankings.

In-form Floridian Billy Horschel also possesses the tee-to-green class to handle PGA National and is preferred to Ian Poulter in the 4.15pm contest.
