Day one preview

Betfred British Masters favourite Lee Westwood is scheduled to tee off at 9.10am on Wednesday, looking to make a fast start at Close House for an event which concludes on Saturday.

Westwood will be in the company of fellow Englishman Eddie Pepperell and defending champion Marcus Kinhult in the marquee morning threeball.

Westwood, bursting with course knowledge and in fine fettle before the lockdown, deserves his short price and finished fourth in the Honda Classic on the PGA Tour in March. The experienced campaigner has won six European Tour titles in the UK and Ireland, including the 2007 British Masters.

At bigger odds, though, the most attractive threeball wagers on the card are Westwood's compatriots Steven Brown and Marcus Armitage. Portugal Masters champion Brown, who tied for second in the Worplesdon Charity Pro-Am last month, could take a shine to Close House and upset Sami Valimaki and Guido Migliozzi in their 1pm contest.

Armitage, who had been growing ever more comfortable on the European Tour before the break, won a EuroPro Tour event at Close House in 2015, so can hit the ground running in his 7.50am match against Nacho Elvira and Alexander Bjork.
