Steve Palmer's 2023 Majors acca

Four of the best golfers in the world could make 2023 a year to remember for punters by combining in an enormous-price Majors accumulator.

Bookmakers have odds running for the Masters, US PGA, US Open and Open Championship, meaning a low-stakes fourfold can yield riches if you successfully pinpoint who will lift the most prestigious prizes in golf.

The awesome foursome that could deliver a dream betting year are nominated as Rory McIlroy (a best-price 9-1 for the Masters), Justin Thomas (14-1, PGA Championship), Collin Morikawa (22-1, US Open) and Jordan Spieth (20-1, Open Championship).

The fourfold returns £72,450 for a £1 stake with Coral and Ladbrokes.

McIlroy has made great strides with his approach-play and putting this year. Distance control with his irons is much improved and he has become consistently solid on the greens. These are the departments of the game which have typically dashed McIlroy's hopes of a Green Jacket, but everything seems in place for a massive Masters title tilt this April.

McIlroy will have to deal with the ultimate pressure again - this will be the ninth time he has teed up at Augusta looking to complete a career Grand Slam - but he took heart from his runner-up finish at the Cathedral of Pines this year and looks set to go one better.

Justin Thomas can bring up leg two of the acca a few weeks after his 30th birthday. Thomas is looking to complete a US PGA hat-trick and this showman should relish the opportunity to do so in front of a noisy New York crowd.

Accurate drivers Jason Dufner and Jim Furyk finished first and second the last time Oak Hill staged a Major, but that is probably a red herring from nine years ago and a major course redesign started in 2019. Tree reduction and pruning has made this more of a second-shot course - and the typically exquisite iron-play of Thomas can see him retain his title.

There has not been a Major in the Los Angeles area for 28 years - and there has not been a US Open there for 75 years - so the atmosphere at Los Angeles Country Club in June should be incredible. The Californians will be thrilled with the venue choice, with Morikawa, in particular, licking his lips.

Accurate approach-play will be the key to US Open success and Los Angeles-born Morikawa can send the galleries wild. He won four points from four matches for the USA in the 2017 Walker Cup at this course. US Open glory would take him only a Green Jacket away from a career Grand Slam.

Three-time Major champion Spieth can complete the fourfold by lifting the Claret Jug for a second time. He was 36th at Royal Liverpool in 2014, but that was just his second Open start, and he has since fallen in love with the tournament. Spieth's form figures from his last seven Opens are 4-30-1-9-20-2-8.

McIlroy will be a popular choice as he returns to the scene of his Open triumph, but a wet weekend and some tee-time fortune aided that victory. If the latest British summer is anything to go by, a baked, firm, fast Royal Liverpool seems more likely this time. The creativity and touch of Spieth - not to mention the Texan's comfort in a breeze - may prove decisive.

Bookmakers will not allow you to pick a player multiple times - for example, if you put McIlroy in your acca for the Masters, he cannot be used for any of the other three Majors, because a victory would automatically shorten his odds for subsequent Majors.

Six of the last seven seasons have passed without multiple Major champions - Brooks Koepka enjoyed a rare double in 2018 - so the acca wager is worth risking.

It is easy to bust the maximum payout restrictions with this type of bet, so punters should be aware of the rules from which their layer is working. It is wise to target bookmakers who are happy to return £500,000 - and not to over-stake - although some punters may choose to bust the win limit to get more on the place part of an each-way multiple.
