Preview

Viktor Hovland and Collin Morikawa are two of the most promising youngsters on the planet and there could easily come a time when they fill the top two places in the world rankings.

Given the enormous potential of the 22-year-old duo, the 5-1 chalked up by one firm about them both winning on the PGA Tour this season looks generous.

Hovland, low amateur in the Masters and the US Open last season before threatening a PGA Tour breakthrough in the weeks that followed, conjured a final-round 60 alongside Matt Wolff in the QBE Shootout pairs event in his final outing of 2019.

Expect Hovland to get off the mark on the PGA Tour soon, while Morikawa, who has already done so, will fancy his chances of securing victory number two at some stage over the next eight months.

Another bet which appeals is backing Tiger Woods to win a 2020 Olympic medal. Woods is highly motivated to qualify for the Olympics and add a new achievement to his unrivalled CV. He was thrilled to lead an American side to victory in the Presidents Cup last time out – his first taste of captaincy – and another fresh target has come on his radar.

Woods won the Zozo Championship in Japan in October and expects to return to that country for the Olympics in July. The top 15 in the world rankings earn automatic spots, with a maximum of four players per country, so the American line-up as things stand would be Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson and Woods.

Expect Woods, hugely impressive off the tee in recent weeks, to fiercely protect his position in the rankings as the Olympics approaches, then become a leading contender for the gold medal when the event takes place.

European Tour Rookie of the Year Robert MacIntyre was a three-time runner-up last season and the Scottish left-hander is a fair price at 5-4 to make his breakthrough this term.

There are plenty of excellent opportunities for MacIntyre in the middle of the year including the British Masters, which takes place at the same time as the Olympic golf tournament.
