Second-round preview

TPC Summerlin typically plays into the hands of razor-sharp putting and Nick Taylor, who carded an eight-under 63 in round one in Las Vegas, excelled with the flat stick to take the lead on Thursday.

The Canadian ranked 14th in the field with the putter and leads by one shot at the Nevada track from fellow short-game specialist Brian Harman.

A resurgent Phil Mickelson carded 65 to sit two off the pace but Lefty has struggled in recent months and bookmakers prefer the chances of ante-post 12-1 shot Patrick Cantlay, who is into 9-1 from 12-1.

World number one Brooks Koepka could shoot only a one-under 70 on his first start of the PGA Tour season but his younger brother Chase is among the leaders following an opening 66.

Second-round threeball punters should take a chance on underdog Patton Kizzire seeing off Charles Howell and Russell Knox when they tee off at 8.10pm.

Kizzire started the 2019-20 campaign with three consecutive missed cuts but he did at least card a second-round 69 at last week's Safeway Open and he followed that with a much-improved 66 yesterday.

The 33-year-old, who is a two-time US Tour champion, ranked seventh in strokes gained putting on the PGA Tour last season and he has a fine Summerlin record, finishing second there in 2015 and fourth in 2017.

He is up against two creditable rivals who both shot under par rounds on Thursday but, as the outsider of three, Kizzire looks worth a punt.
