Presidents Cup day-two preview

The USA have already taken a firm grip on the Presidents Cup after day one, with the hosts securing a 4-1 lead following the opening foursomes on Thursday.

Davis Love III’s men were clear pre-event favourites to retain the trophy they won in Melbourne in 2019 and the opening day’s success has seen the Americans' odds come in even further

Attentions turn to fourballs on Friday and the US appear too strong again across the five matches for their International opponents, who are staring at a heavy defeat.

The experienced US duo of Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas will kick things off on day two, against Australian pair Adam Scott and Cam Davis.

Spieth and Thomas were four under on the front nine on Thursday and were three up in the first six holes, so expect another quick start on Friday.

World number one Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns are up next against Sungjae Im and Sebastian Munoz, before Kevin Kisner and Cameron Young face off against Mito Pereira and Christiaan Bezuidenhout.

Match Four sees Japanese star Hideki Matsuyama and Korean youngster Tom Kim pair up against Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele. The scars will still be fresh for Matsuyama as well, after suffering a 6&5 mauling – alongside Scott - against the American duo on Thursday.

In the final game, Canadian duo Corey Conners and Taylor Pendrith face Billy Horschel and last week’s Fortinet Championship winner, Max Homa.

Somewhat surprisingly, Trevor Immelman has opted not to pair together Thursday’s only winning combination for the Internationals – Davis and Si Woo Kim – and that looks like it could be a costly mistake.

It is hard to make a case for any of the International pairings against what is a very strong USA team and there is every chance that Friday could be a whitewash for the hosts.

That makes the case for a ‘23-7 win or Better’ for the home side - available at 7-1 - look even stronger, with the USA available at 4-9 to be Day Two winners at Quail Hollow.
