Second-round preview

The three-course structure of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am means there will be no stress over missing the cut on Friday, and the presence of amateurs in the tournament means punters will be analysing twoball clashes rather than the more conventional threeballs this week.

One player who looks a decent bet in his match-up is 35-year-old American Brandon Harkins, who was celebrating his first tournament victory in 179 attempts last week when he won the Bahamas Great Abaco Classic on the subsidiary Korn Ferry Tour.

Harkins, who hails from 100 miles up the California coast at Walnut Creek, has had limited success on the PGA Tour, finishing in the top ten four times, but his playoff success should have boosted his confidence no end.

And he has some decent course form at Pebble Beach, where he was 15th in 2018 when he closed with a 66 and 28th the following year.

Harkins takes on the Spyglass Hills on Friday - Pebble Beach and Monterey Peninsula are the other two tracks on the rotation - and he can build on his 71 at Monterey alongside Aaron Rai after they tee off at 6.42pm.

Rai, who hails from Wolverhampton and is looking to make a big Stateside impression this year, is making his course debut and despite the fact a sixth at last week's Farmers Insurance Open would have been snapped up at the start, he failed to make much of a Sunday impression as Luke List took the honours.

He had missed the cut at the Sony Open in Hawaii and was 59th at the American Express before that, so a bit of local knowledge could benefit his American playing partner.

Lucas Glover signed for a disappointing Spyglass 75 on Thursday but he can bounce back at Pebble Beach in his second round and get the better of DJ Trahan in the 6.20pm match-up.

The former US Open champion claimed his first victory for ten years when he won the John Deere Classic in July and there is also decent 2022 form in the book as he was fifth at the Sony Open in Hawaii last month.

Thursday may just have been one of those days for Glover and it will take more than a three-under-par 68 to suggest that Trahan has turned the corner.

He has not finished in the top 50 in any of his last 18 tournaments and it would be a big surprise if he managed to stay the course, particularly as he has missed the cut in four of his last five Pebble attempts.
