Story so far

As we head into the final round in South Carolina, Harold Varner III leads the field by one after an outstanding 63 on Saturday.

The man from Ohio is looking for his first win on the PGA Tour and Saturday’s bogey-free round showed it won’t be long until he is gracing the winner’s enclosure.

It might not be this weekend though, with no fewer than seven players within two shots of Varner and many of those chasing have the big-time experience – including former Major champion Shane Lowry and nine-time Tour winner Matt Kuchar.

Lowry is one of three players tied on ten-under with the Irishman looking to build on an excellent showing at Augusta, where he finished tied for third.

Kuchar, meanwhile, is one of four sat on nine-under-par and the veteran knows exactly what it takes to win at Harbour Town, having finished top of the leaderboard in 2014.

Leaderboard

-11 Harold Varner III
-10 Shane Lowry, Erik van Rooyen, Patrick Cantlay
-9 Hudson Swafford, Matt Kuchar, Sepp Straka, Aaron Wise
-8 Tommy Fleetwood, Billy Horschel, Jordan Spieth, Joel Dahmen

Best Prices

4-1 Patrick Cantlay, 9-2 Shane Lowry, 5-1 Harold Varner III, 9-1 Erik van Rooyen, 16-1 Matt Kuchar

Final Round Preview

Ian Wilkerson tipped Shane Lowry for victory at the start of the week and there’s no reason to think that the 35-year-old won’t collect the $1.4million winner’s prize.

Going into this tournament, the European Ryder Cup star had finished T13-T12-T3 in his last three stroke-play events on the PGA Tour and Lowry looks to have his steely determination back.

Lowry is fourth in scoring average on tour and also worth noting is his Sunday record, with the stats having him 13th in the final round-performance table.

Another European ace heading in the right direction is Tommy Fleetwood, who carded a 64 on Saturday – bettered only by leader Varner (63).

The Englishman has clearly grown in confidence from his T20 finish at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in early March and his top-15 finish at the Masters was another indication that he is getting back to his best.
