Story so far

Kurt Kitayama tops a congested leaderboard after two days of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am – the 30-year-old PGA Tour maiden upstaging the bigger names.

The weather suddenly deteriorated on day two of the event, with some rain and breeze entering the equation, and Kitayama battled to a 70 at Pebble Beach to edge one shot in front. The pre-tournament 66-1 chance has shortened to 10-1 with 36 holes to play.

Viktor Hovland, Jordan Spieth and Matt Fitzpatrick were the ante-post market principals. Hovland is in the thick of things, just three shots behind, while Spieth is two shots further back. Fitzpatrick got to five under par with seven holes of round two to play, but lost his way from there and drifted seven off the pace.

The cut will be made after round three. Each of the competitors will have played a round on each of the courses – Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill and Monterey Peninsula – before the cutmakers gather at Pebble Beach for Sunday's final round.

Third-round preview

The Pebble Beach Pro-Am is wide open with two rounds to play – and punters need to be aware of the staggered nature of this race. With players having teed up at different courses over the first two days – and again for round three – the leaderboard is not crystal clear.

To help punters, here are the 36-hole averages for the three courses – Monterey Peninsula has played to minus 1.204 (the easiest track), Pebble Beach has played to minus 0.260 (second easiest) and Spyglass has played to plus 0.862 (the toughest).

Players with Spyglass Hill behind them will feel good about the weekend ahead. Those who fit that criteria and should be of outright interest to punters today are Keith Mitchell (who is playing Pebble Beach in round three), Brandon Wu (Pebble Beach), Seamus Power (Pebble Beach), Scott Stallings (Monterey Peninsula), Denny McCarthy (Monterey Peninsula), Viktor Hovland (Pebble Beach) and Kevin Yu (Monterey Peninsula).

Racing Post Sport pre-tournament recommendations – Matt Fitzpatrick, Tom Hoge and Maverick McNealy – also have Spyglass Hill behind them. This trio need a Saturday sizzler to get back into things, though, and it is tempting to add others to the stable. Yu stands out at 28-1 as the best option.

With the easiest track to come on Saturday – and a starting position of three shots behind a player who is teeing up at Spyglass – Yu can be fancied to make inroads.

The forecast for Sunday is daunting for the players – light rain and moderate breezes – and the ball-striking strength of Yu should be shown to good effect. The 24-year-old looks set to become a PGA Tour champion sooner rather than later.

Pick of the third-round twoball options is Seamus Power – a natural for coastal tracks on a breezy day. The Irishman, who won the Bermuda Championship in October and was fifth in the RSM Classic in November, can be preferred to Thomas Detry.
