Second-round preview

Louis Oosthuizen overcame illness in spectacular fashion to open the Nedbank Challenge with a magnificent nine-under-par 63, the ante-post favourite taking a firm grip on proceedings at the Gary Player Country Club.

Oosthuizen went down with kidney stones on the eve of the tournament and was sitting in hospital at 3am wondering whether he should even bother to tee off in the event known as Africa's Major. The former Open champion was feeling a little better by sunrise and opted to keep his place in the tournament, going on to produce a near flawless round.

Oosthuizen, walking slower than usual in a bid to combat his discomfort, birdied the first and the second holes to get off to a flying start, following up with seven further birdies on a bogey-free scorecard. He was groggy but positive in his post-round interview, suggesting that he may be over the worst of his kidney problem, and a leaderboard redraw means he will get maximum time to recover for round two.

Oosthuizen, backed from 12-1 to 8-1 pre-tournament, is scheduled to tee off in round two alongside Thomas Detry and Guido Migliozzi at 8.50am UK and Ireland time. He has become a general 10-11 chance to convert his three-shot advantage into a first Nedbank victory.

Second-round threeball punters are pointed towards Tommy Fleetwood, who can outgun Aaron Rai and Mikko Korhonen in their 7.55am meeting.
