Second-round preview

The Mayakoba Classic is playing catch-up after bad weather washed out the entirety of Thursday, so only 18 holes of action has been completed at El Camaleon, Mexico, going into the weekend.

Pre-tournament 50-1 chance Danny Lee is setting the pace, the New Zealander reaching nine under par, and he is 11-2 favourite with three rounds to go. Lee finished runner-up to Justin Thomas in the CJ Cup last month and runner-up to Matt Kuchar in the Mayakoba Classic last year.

Lee, whose only PGA Tour victory came in the 2015 Greenbrier, has found form and is course-proven, so is entitled to plenty of respect after his barnstorming start, during which he was threatening a 59 until three-putting the 14th hole from 15 feet.

Also on the radar of outright punters at this stage should be Billy Horschel, who opened with a six-under-par 66 and is hoping to catch the eye of US Presidents Cup captain Tiger Woods. If Brooks Koepka should declare himself unfit for the Presidents Cup after knee problems, Woods will need to call up another wild-card pick, and in-form Horschel would be in the running.

Racing Post Sport ante-post selections, Abraham Ancer and Harris English, have both got off to solid starts and should also be considered by punters looking to get involved at this stage. The 16-1 Ancer, 12-1 English and 11-1 Horschel are the most appealing prices.

Those wishing to play on the second-round threeballs should consider Aaron Wise and Scottie Scheffler, two super talented and powerful players who are appreciating the softness of El Camaleon this week.

Wise can account for Luke Donald and Pat Perez in their 5.30pm meeting, while Scheffler should carry too many guns for Robert Streb and Robert Sloan again, having outscored them by five and six shots respectively in round one.

The action resumes at noon UK and Ireland time and a Monday finish to the tournament is certain, with not enough daylight hours available at this time of the year to quickly recover the lost 18 holes.
