Kevin Tway can again show the way to his playing partners

Justin Rose suffered back spasms which forced him to miss the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone a month ago, but the Englishman appears to be fully firing again and he has taken the lead in the Dell Technologies Championship.

Rose could be backed at 25-1 ante-post for Dell Technologies glory, but no bigger than 9-2 is available after he opened with a six-under-par 65 in the second event of the FedEx Cup playoffs. The 2013 US Open champion carded six birdies and 12 pars in a flawless start.

Russell Knox has advertised his Ryder Cup wildcard claims by moving into second place, just a shot behind, while world number one Dustin Johnson is keeping close order from a share of eighth spot, just three off the pace.

Jordan Spieth and Brooks Koepka have both laid an excellent foundation for the rest of the tournament – both two under par and four behind – but several star names have given themselves a mountain to climb over the next three days. Jason Day got off to a shocking start with a birdie-free 76, while Justin Thomas and Jon Rahm (both 73s) are also playing catch-up. Tiger Woods is mid-division after a 72.

The second round starts at 1.15pm UK and Ireland time for an event which finishes on Monday, a Bank Holiday Stateside.

Rose's recent record at TPC Boston is patchy, so there is no guarantee he will kick on from his lid-pinging performance. Outright punters should probably be focusing on Johnson, who seems determined to win a first FedEx Cup and has his game-face on this week, and 2014 TPC Boston champion Chris Kirk.

After opening with a 67, Kirk, who has made 12 cuts in a row on the US Tour, will be fancying his chances of going close to a second Boston triumph, and 50-1 looks like juicy each-way value with bookmakers still offering five places.

Second-round threeball punters should focus on Kevin Tway (6.52pm), who crushed his playing partners by three and five shots respectively in round one. Tway is well suited to the TPC Boston challenge, while Troy Merritt is carrying injury problems and Satoshi Kodaira has been in miserable nick since his surprise Heritage victory in April.

The marquee threeball of Johnson, Thomas and Bryson DeChambeau is scheduled to resume at 6.28pm UK and Ireland time.
