Jordan Spieth sets sights on career Grand Slam after returning to winning ways
US PGA Championship fast approaching in wake of RBC Heritage glory
Jordan Spieth beat Patrick Cantlay in a playoff for the RBC Heritage title on Sunday - the three-time Major champion secured his 13th PGA Tour victory and moved up to tenth in the world rankings.
Spieth, a 40-1 chance ante-post, got up and down from a greenside bunker for par at the first extra hole. Cantlay, beaten in a playoff for the second time this year, suffered a plugged lie in the same bunker and failed to recover for par.
Spieth, who finished runner-up in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February, will be thrilled to have got back to winning ways with his most important tournament of the year on the horizon. The 28-year-old is one leg away from completing a career Grand Slam of Majors, with the US PGA Championship the missing piece of the jigsaw.
The US PGA starts on May 19 at Southern Hills, Tulsa, and Spieth can be backed at 25-1 to join the most prestigious club in golf. Only five players in history have achieved a career Grand Slam.
Cantlay is also a 25-1 chance for the US PGA, with Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler contesting favouritism.
This week punters have two tournaments to consider, with the DP World Tour schedule resuming. The inaugural ISPS Handa Championship in Spain starts at the Lakes Course, Tarragona, on Thursday. Former Ryder Cuppers Bernd Wiesberger and Thorbjorn Olesen are in attendance.
The PGA Tour moves from South Carolina to Louisiana for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans - the annual pairs event which was won by Cameron Smith and Marc Leishman last year. The Australian duo have returned to defend their title.
