The story so far

Robert Streb has emerged from the golfing wilderness to enjoy a three-shot lead heading into the final round of the RSM Classic at Sea Island Resort on St Simons Island, Georgia.

Streb, who earned his only PGA Tour victory in the 2014 RSM, established his lead by firing a 63 at the Plantation Course on Friday.

The 33-year-old Oklahoman extended his advantage on Saturday, carding a bogey-free 67 which takes him into the final round three shots clear of Zach Johnson and PGA Tour maiden Bronson Burgoon.

Leaderboard

Final-round preview

Robert Streb has barely been a factor on the PGA Tour in 2020 but those who have played well at the RSM in the past often tend to do so again and that has been the case for the overnight leader.

Streb has made four cuts from 16 tournaments in 2020, all of them in low-key events, but he will tee it up on the Seaside Course with a three-shot advantage and a fair chance of winning for the first time in six years.

This represents a big opportunity for Streb to seal his playing rights at this early stage of the 2020-21 PGA Tour season. That could lead to plenty of nervous moments at a course where water and various other hazards are often in play.

While he may well be able to get the job done, Streb's lack of recent experience on the sharp end in tournaments could well see him come back to the field and odds no bigger than 6-4 make no appeal.

The Seaside Course lends itself to low scoring when conditions allow and Streb's own RSM triumph, where he carded a final-round 63 before downing Brendon de Jonge and Will MacKenzie in a playoff, should serve as a cautionary tale.

Of the chasing pack, Zach Johnson looks the most likely to capitalise should the leader begin to falter and rates a worthy wager at 9-2.

A two-time Major winner with 12 PGA Tour titles and a stack of cash behind him, Johnson has no need to worry about his playing rights and, while he hasn't won in five years, the St Simons Island resident is unlikely to think twice if presented with a chance.

The 44-year-old burst out the traps on Saturday before a six at the par-five seventh saw him stall in the middle of the round.

However, Johnson rolled in a 20-foot birdie putt at 14, made an easy four at the par-five 15th and walked off the course on a high thanks to a lengthy birdie at the last. Expect him to charge at the leader.

PGA Tour maiden Bronson Burgoon has contended from nowhere this week and may struggle to go the pace while Emiliano Grillo and Kyle Stanley will both need the putter to warm up if they are to close the gap.

Kevin Kisner won the 2015 RSM by six shots but 12-1 is not all that appealing about someone who will start five shots in arrears.
