Five morning starters took advantage of benign conditions at Lahinch Golf Club to set the early pace at five under par in round one of the Irish Open – Wade Ormsby, Mike Lorenzo-Vera, Hyowon Park, Thorbjorn Olesen and Lee Slattery all needed just 65 shots.

There was a bit more breeze in the afternoon, so scoring stalled, although local hero Padraig Harrington raced to the turn in four under par to thrill the galleries.

Second-round threeball punters are pointed towards Rafa Cabrera-Bello, who comfortably outscored his playing partners Ryan Fox and Thomas Pieters on day one. Fox and Pieters are both headstrong characters who will start round two well below the cut line and could quickly lose interest without early inroads.

Cabrera-Bello, who opened with a tidy 68, is the most controlled operator of the trio and full focus is guaranteed from the Spaniard throughout.
