Gary Woodland won the US Open in the early hours of Monday morning, the Kansas man overcoming high-class opposition to become a Major champion at Pebble Beach, California.

Woodland, a standout 80-1 with Hills on the eve of the tournament and a general 66-1 elsewhere, holed a long putt for a birdie at the final hole to seal a three-shot victory. Ante-post money immediately started flowing for next month's Open – the new king of Pebble Beach is a general 50-1 to triumph at Portrush, too, in the final Major of the season.

Brooks Koepka, seeking a third consecutive US Open title, came closest to stopping Woodland. Koepka finished alone in second place, one over par for his final seven holes, unable to deliver a finishing kick when it seemed he could win a fifth Major in his last nine attempts.

The Major form figures of Koepka this season, though, are 2-1-2, and he is the early favourite for the Open. The cocksure Floridian superstar, whose caddie is a member of Portrush, is no bigger than 8-1. Rory McIlroy, who carded a final-round 72 to finish tied ninth at Pebble, has drifted to 10-1 for the Open.

The European Tour is in Germany this week for the BMW International Open, where Sergio Garcia headlines the field. The US Tour moves to Connecticut for the Travelers Championship, featuring Koepka, Jason Day, Patrick Cantlay, Francesco Molinari and Justin Thomas.
