Adam Scott was the 30-1 winner of the Genesis Invitational on Sunday, a one-under-par 70 enough for the Australian to triumph after a final round in which Riviera Country Club humbled several superstars.

Scott double-bogeyed the fifth hole, but carded five birdies to repair the damage, ending up two shots clear after a par on the 18th. He became the seventh Aussie winner in the last two months, following his victory in the Australian PGA just before Christmas, then Wade Ormsby (Hong Kong Open), Cameron Smith (Sony Open), Lucas Herbert (Dubai Desert Classic), Marc Leishman (Farmers Insurance Open) and Min Woo Lee (Vic Open).

Scott, a former world number one and the 2013 Masters champion, has convinced punters he is a runner for the first Major of this year. The Riviera victor is a 28-1 chance to follow up his Genesis triumph with the Green Jacket.

Rory McIlroy held a share of the lead with Scott and Matt Kuchar going into the final round at Riviera, but a triple-bogey seven at the fifth hole derailed the Northern Irishman and he ended up tied for fifth place.

Dustin Johnson also contended at Riviera, but the former world number one endured a birdie-free back-nine to drop into a share of tenth spot. Tiger Woods finished last of the weekend qualifiers, slumping to closing rounds of 76 and 77 at a course where his record is terrible by his standards.

This week the circuit moves to Mexico for the WGC-Mexico Championship, where McIlroy tops the betting. The PGA Tour is also running the Puerto Rico Open, headlined by Viktor Hovland.
