Dustin Johnson returns to action in Houston looking to find pre-Masters form

The vast majority of golf punters endured an agonising weekend as unfancied outsiders won both the Cyprus Open and the Bermuda Championship, leaving the betting community with just one more week to build resources for the forthcoming Masters.

Callum Shinkwin was the 125-1 winner in Cyprus, the Hertfordshire man making a birdie at the first extra hole to see off Kalle Samooja in a playoff. The well-backed Sami Valimaki went two shots ahead after 11 holes of the final round, but bogeys at the 13th, 15th and 16th saw the Finn rapidly surrender and finish sixth.

A second playoff in Bermuda saw 250-1 rag Brian Gay emerge triumphant. Ante-post 28-1 chance, Doc Redman, led going into Sunday and was 5-2 for success, but a 69 dropped him to fourth place. Wyndham Clark was one over par for his final seven holes of regulation play before losing to a Gay birdie at the first extra hole.

This week the European Tour stays in Cyprus for the Cyprus Showdown. The unique format for this event means the 105-man field will be cut to the top 32 (and ties) after 36 holes of strokeplay, before scores are reset. The top 16 players (and ties) from Saturday's round progress to the final day, for which scores are again reset. Sunday will see an 18-hole shootout for the title.

The PGA Tour stages the Houston Open, where world number one Dustin Johnson returns to action after his Covid-19 layoff. Brooks Koepka, Jason Day and Sergio Garcia are also in Houston.
