Dustin Johnson drains enormous eagle putt to claim LIV Golf Boston glory

Dustin Johnson won LIV Golf Boston on Sunday night with a spectacular eagle three at the first playoff hole, defeating Anirban Lahiri and Joaquin Niemann at the Oaks Course in Massachusetts.

Johnson could manage only a par five in regulation play at the 18th hole, but he hit a perfect drive on the same hole in the playoff, then found the green with his second.

Niemann made a mess of the hole and it seemed that Johnson and Lahiri would trade birdie fours to keep the playoff going. Johnson raced his long eagle putt at the hole, though, and it crashed into the back of the cup to send the galleries wild. DJ was a Racing Post Sport pre-tournament recommendation at 13-2.

Ante-post favourite Cameron Smith finished tied for fourth place, one shot shy of the playoff. Oliver Wilson was the 250-1 winner of the Made In HimmerLand on the DP World Tour. The next LIV event is next week - LIV Golf Chicago - which will probably have a similar field to the Boston one.

This week all eyes turn to Wentworth, Surrey, which stages the DP World Tour's flagship event. The BMW PGA Championship boasts a star-studded field, headlined by FedEx Cup champion Rory McIlroy. It seems 17 LIV Golf players will be going to post in the BMW PGA, which starts on Thursday.

The last two US Open champions - Jon Rahm and Matthew Fitzpatrick - will join defending champion Billy Horschel at Wentworth.
