CT Pan looks the man to be on at the Mayakoba Classic

Three men led the way after the first round of the Mayakoba Classic but Matt Kuchar, Kramer Hickok and Dominic Bozzelli will do well to stay in front as 29 golfers sat within two shots of the lead heading into day two.

The trio each carded an opening 64 at El Camaleon to establish a slender advantage while ante-post tournament favourite Rickie Fowler sits two shots back and has been clipped into 7-1 from 9-1 to win on the PGA Tour for the first time in 2018.

The presence of Kuchar, whose wife Sybi carried Zach Johnson's bag for the final four holes on Thursday after his regular caddie fell ill, gives credence to Mayakoba as a track which favours accurate play.

Playing from the fairways in essential so anyone with impressive driving stats is likely to remain in the mix heading into the weekend and talented Taiwanese CT Pan certainly fell into that category in hitting 93 percent of fairways in shooting a four-under 67.

Pan knocked on the door towards the end of the 2018 US Tour season, finishing second at the Wyndham Championship and fourth in a strong field at the Dell Technologies, and does not look far away from recording a first victory at this level.

The 26-year-old has recorded three top-30 finishes to open the new campaign and will have high hopes of climbing the Mayakoba leaderboard.

He rates a confident selection in the 5.50pm threeball when he tees off alongside Charley Hoffman, who struggled to hit fairways on Thursday, and limited 35-year-old Ryan Blaum.
