American captain Steve Stricker has announced his Ryder Cup wildcards, snubbing the regularly controversial Patrick Reed in favour of a more harmonious locker room.

Reed has been a hugely successful Ryder Cup performer, but he fell ill with bilateral pneumonia three weeks ago and did not do enough on his return to action in last week's Tour Championship to convince Stricker he was worthy of a place on his side.

Stricker gave the nod to Daniel Berger, Harris English, Tony Finau, Xander Schauffele, Scottie Scheffler and Jordan Spieth. It remains to be seen whether another pick will be needed, with Brooks Koepka an injury doubt.

Koepka damaged his wrist in the third round of the Tour Championship and withdrew, so the Floridian has a race against time to be fit to face Europe at Whistling Straits. The Ryder Cup starts on September 24.

Reed, Webb Simpson, Billy Horschel, Kevin Na, Jason Kokrak, Sam Burns and Kevin Kisner are the most likely candidates for selection should Koepka declare himself unfit.

Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson and Patrick Cantlay are 7-1 co-favourites with BoyleSports to be the top USA points scorer and the hosts are 4-7 for the match, with Europe a general 15-8 and the draw at 12-1.

Berger and English, both rookies, are 16-1 joint-outsiders with BoyleSports for top American.
