First-round preview

Precise tee-to-green play is key to success at Valderrama and that points to Fabrizio Zanotti putting on a strong show at the Andalucia Masters this week.

The Paraguayan was fourth in this Spanish test last year and 26th on his other previous go this decade, so he has much better course credentials than both Matthew Jordan and Daniel van Tonder, who join him in Thursday's 12.30pm threeball.

Zanotti was four shots behind winner Matthew Fitzpatrick last year, while Jordan's only Valderrama finish was the 52nd he mustered two years ago and Van Tonder missed the weekend by a whopping seven shots last year.

There has been little to get excited about their recent play either as Van Tonder has been struggling to stay in the world's top 200 since winning the SA Open in December, while Jordan's fourth at the Made in Himmerland a few weeks ago is the only top-20 finish he has claimed in the last five months.

Zanotti missed the cut in his last outing at the Italian Open, but he preceded that with top-20s at the European Masters (16th), Made in Himmerland (12th) and BMW PGA Championship (13).

He was tied for second after the first round at Wentworth and he is capable of making another fast start.
