Saturday hurling preview

Cork and Tipperary will be aiming to avoid back-to-back defeats but the reigning All-Ireland champions are fancied to get their league campaign up and running.

The intensity and work-rate shown by Liam Sheedy's men in the early stages of last week's defeat to Limerick was highly impressive. Tipperary outplayed their provincial rivals to lead by nine points at half-time and stretched their advantage to ten shortly after the restart.

However, their lack of practice since returning from a break told and the Premier County side were outscored 2-10 to 0-5 in the second half.

With that game under their belts, Tipperary should find improvement and prove too hot to handle for a Cork team who generally lack consistency and failed to convince despite having a chance to snatch a draw against Waterford last weekend.

Kieran Kingston says he has placed emphasis on rattling the onion sack since returning to his post as Rebels manager and he saw his charges score a satisfactory 3-17 last week, a welcome change from their previous goal returns.

Since the 2015 league campaign, Cork have scored more than two goals in a game only twice, averaging 1.098 goals per league and championship fixture during the same period - Kingston seems intent on improving that statistic.

Tipperary have more ammunition to keep the scoreboard ticking throughout the contest and see off their provincial rivals, but don't be surprised if Cork continue their goal-focused ways and put a couple past a Tipperary defence who leaked a brace last weekend.
