Simon Whitlock v Christian Perez

Simon Whitlock is a former World Championship runner-up and when he is on-song he is a 180-hitting machine. The Australian looked in good form at the Grand Slam of Darts in November and in the group-stage of that event he defeated opening opponent Christian Perez 5-3, a match in which he hit six maximums. This contest should go longer than eight legs, so over 4.5 Whitlock maximums must make plenty of appeal.

Daryl Gurney v Alan Soutar

Daryl Gurney has been below his best for some time and he is worth opposing against Alan Soutar, who may be the sharper of the two after an easy 3-0 win over Mal Cuming in round one. Soutar showed when making the fourth round on his World Championship debut last year that he is capable of going through the gears and Gurney may be lacking belief following his recent decline.

Ryan Meikle v Lisa Ashton

Four-time women’s world champion Lisa Ashton has shown she is capable of being competitive on this stage in previous visits to Ally Pally and she can play her part in a lengthy duel with Ryan Meikle. Ashton has won sets in two of her three previous World Championship matches and although steady, Meikle may have to contend with a vocal crowd.

Cameron Menzies v Diogo Portela

Diogo Portela has lost in the first-round of the World Championship on four of his five visits to Alexandra Palace and another early exit beckons against Cameron Menzies, who pushed Michael van Gerwen close in a 6-4 defeat on his last appearance at the Players Championship Finals in November.
