Preview

New Zealand last qualified for the World Cup in 2010 and they could once again miss out on a place in the finals with Costa Rica awaiting them in the inter-confederation playoff this time.

In 2014 and 2018, New Zealand reached this stage of the qualification process, only to lose to Mexico and Peru.

The quality of opponents they have been facing in the Oceanic qualifiers is typically lower than that of the teams Costa Rica face and the Concacaf nation are worth a bet.

Since the start of the month, New Zealand have lost 1-0 to Peru and drawn 0-0 with Oman and, although these were friendlies, they are games that would have been taken seriously with this fixture on the horizon.

Costa Rica, meanwhile, finished level on points with the USA during Concacaf qualifying, missing out on an automatic spot in Qatar due to goal difference.
