Peru and Australia are familiar foes, having met in the 2018 World Cup group stage, and the South Americans are fancied to repeat their victory from that meeting and qualify for Qatar.

While the White & Reds may lack the star names of some of the other Conmebol qualifiers, they are a resolute unit under popular coach Ricardo Gareca.

Their opponents Australia looked to be cruising to automatic qualification before a run of one win in seven qualifiers derailed their bid and they only just scraped into the playoffs.

The Socceroos hardly put concerns about their form to bed as they edged past United Arab Emirates 2-1 to reach this clash and they will be without playmaker Tom Rogic who misses out for personal reasons.

Peru have won six of their last nine matches and have kept five clean sheets in that run, including in a 1-0 win over New Zealand last time out.

Their superior defensive abilities may be enough for them to grind out what looks likely to be a low-scoring victory.
