Northern Ireland eased to a 4-0 win over San Marino on Saturday but Michael O’Neill’s men are facing a dramatic step up in class in this World Cup qualifier in Hannover.

World champions Germany are favourites to retain the trophy in Russia in 2018 and were unlucky to lose to France in the Euro 2016 semi-final after a dazzling first 40 minutes against Les Bleus.

Their progress to the last four included a group victory over Northern Ireland when a 1-0 scoreline belied the huge gulf between the sides. Germany hit the woodwork twice, won the shot count 26-2 and completed 650 passes to their opponents’ 112 in as comfortable a one-goal win as you are likely to see.
