Weekend preview
Looking to capitalise on the hype generated by a superb Women's Euros in the summer, the Women's Super League is set for record attendance figures in the north London derby between Arsenal and Tottenham this weekend with more than 50,000 tickets already sold for Saturday's contest.
And the Gunners can turn on the style in front of their home supporters at the Emirates Stadium.
With Euro 2022 star Beth Mead leading their line along with Swedish talent Stina Blackstenius and Netherlands icon Vivianne Miedema, the Gunners laid down a marker with a 4-0 thrashing of Brighton last Friday.
That put them top of the early standings and they should again rack up the goals against rivals Spurs, who began the season with a 2-1 win over Leicester but have lost four of their five Women's Super League meetings with Arsenal.
Arsenal fell only one point short of champions Chelsea in last season's Women's Super League but already have a three-point advantage over the Blues, who fell to a shock 2-1 loss against newly promoted Liverpool last weekend.
Emma Hayes's side opened the scoring from the spot through Fran Kirby but two more penalties from Liverpool turned the game on its head.
That should, however, have acted as a wake-up call for Chelsea, who lost only two of their 22 league assignments last season.
They beat Manchester City in May in the FA Women's Cup and they can come out on top when the teams lock horns at Kingsmeadow on Sunday.
