Match preview

This season's Women’s Champions League begins on Tuesday evening and WSL leaders Arsenal are in at the deep end as they travel to reigning champions Barcelona.

Some major changes have taken place for this year’s edition with the inclusion of a group stage for the first time rather than a straight knockout format.

Four groups of four teams will play to decide who makes the quarter-finals. The league winners of UEFA’s top-four ranked divisions progressed straight to this stage, while every other side had to come through qualification.

DAZN have acquired the television rights for the competition, and will be showing 61 games live for free on their dedicated YouTube channel, including Arsenal’s visit to Barcelona.

WSL champions Chelsea were beaten finalists last season and as domestic winners progressed straight through to the group stage, where they will face Juventus, Wolfsburg and Servette.

Arsenal had to negotiate qualifying but could hardly have done it more comfortably, beating Okzhetpes, PSV Eindhoven and Slavia Prague by an aggregate score of 14-1.

The Gunners have also started strongly in the league, beating Chelsea 3-2 in their opening game of the season and following that up with wins to nil against Reading, Manchester City and Aston Villa.

The signing of American Tobin Heath is a huge coup for the club and will be key to their hopes of getting a result in Spain.

Barca beat Chelsea comfortably in last season's final, but since then their manager has departed in acrimonious circumstances and it may be worth chancing a red-hot Arsenal side to at least find the net.

Both teams scored in Barcelona’s three European ties before their 4-0 win over Chelsea in the 2020-21 showpiece and the Gunners have netted 33 times in nine games in all competitions this season.
