Here are two predictions: video refereeing is going to happen in football. And video refereeing is going to ruin football.
The process to rip up the tradition of humans controlling matches and instead use video replays to try to improve the accuracy of decisions took a worrying step forward recently when Willem II player Anouar Kali was dismissed from a Dutch cup tie against Ajax on the say-so of a video ref.
He had originally been cautioned for a nasty challenge that risked damage to an opponent’s ankle but was then shown a red card when the official in the booth informed the on-field arbiter that the offence was more serious than he had thought.
