Weekend European football preview
Nuremberg are going through some lean times, spending seven of the last eight seasons in Bundesliga 2, but they can boost their chances of a top-flight return by defeating Bavarian rivals Greuther Furth in their first home game of the season.
Both teams experienced a disappointing opening weekend of the season, with Nuremberg losing 3-2 away to St Pauli and Greuther Furth drawing 2-2 at home to Holstein Kiel.
But there was a major positive for Nuremberg to take out of their game at St Pauli because key summer signing Kwadwo Duah was swiftly off the mark with his first goal of the season.
Duah was in demand after impressing for St Gallen in the Swiss top flight last term, scoring 15 goals in 33 appearances, and his eye for goal could be key for Nuremberg, who had previously lacked a reliable goalscorer.
Nuremberg are hopeful of improving on last season's eighth place and could settle into their stride more quickly than Greuther Furth, who finished bottom in the Bundesliga last term with just 18 points.
Greuther Furth won just three league matches throughout last term, all of them on home soil, and their long wait for an away league win could extend beyond this weekend.
Sturm Graz had a decent campaign in Austria last season, finishing runners-up to heavyweights RB Salzburg, and they can start the 2022-23 season in the right manner with victory at Wolfsberger.
Christian Ilzer's side registered seven away league wins last term, including two at the expense of Wolfsberger, who were beaten 4-1 in August 2021 and 2-0 in April this year.
Wolfsberger finished fourth, nine points below Sturm Graz, and the class gap could be evident this week.
Rosenborg's home results – four wins, two draws and no defeats – are keeping them in the top half of the Norwegian top flight and another three points can be gathered at the expense of lowly Tromso.
Kjetil Rekdal's side are unbeaten in six and should be too strong for their third-bottom visitors, who are still searching for their first away win of the season.
Basel are hopeful of mounting a title challenge in Switzerland this term and can secure their first victory of the season when hosting Servette on Sunday.
Alexander Frei's side drew 1-1 away to newly-promoted Winterthur last weekend, but may have better luck against Servette, who have lost seven of their last nine away league fixtures.
A trend of poor away results could also continue for Swedish top-flight side Elfsborg, who head to Kalmar without a win from their last four road trips.
Kalmar have taken ten points from their last four home fixtures and look overpriced.
