Rennes battle to be best of the rest

Approaching the halfway stage in the Ligue 1 season Rennes are in prime position to land second spot and a Champions League berth.

From the end of September, the Brittany outfit put together a 13-game unbeaten run which came to an end when they lost to Lille at the start of the month.

But in that loss and defeat to Nice last time out in the league, they were unlucky, having won the shot counts 10-6 and 21-8, and they can respond by defeating Monaco.

Monaco have won only two of their last seven league matches and Rennes could represent a step-up in quality for the principality club.

Goals have been flowing in Atletico contests

La Liga champions Atletico Madrid have not looked quite right this season.

With the end of the year on the horizon, they find themselves outside the Champions League places and 14 points adrift of leaders Real Madrid.

And central to their decline has been a more porous defence - something uncharacteristic of a Diego Simeone side.

In 17 matches, they have shipped 20 goals which is not terrible but is more than the likes of Rayo Vallecano and Athletic Bilbao have shipped.

As a result, four of their last five matches have seen both teams score and backing the net to bulge at both ends looks a wise bet when they take on lowly Granada, who put four past Mallorca last time out.

Vlahovic targets record in Verona

Manchester City and Arsenal are among the clubs heavily linked with the signature of Fiorentina forward Dusan Vlahovic in January but wherever the Serbian striker ends up, he is sure to leave his mark on Serie A.

Vlahovic recently equalled Cristiano Ronaldo's record for the most Serie A goals in a calendar year when scoring his 33rd league goal of 2021 in Sunday's game with Sassuolo.

And he has just one more game - this week's clash with Verona - to break that record.

With eight goals in six league games, he has form on his side and looks a great bet to get on the scoresheet in Verona.
