We take a look at the leading candidates for the permanent Manchester United manager job after Jose Mourinho was sacked

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer best odds 6-5
Named caretaker manager on Wednesday morning, the baby-faced assassin scored 91 Premier League goals during his Manchester United career - and the winning goal in the 1999 Champions League final. The 45-year-old former Old Trafford favourite had a brief unsuccessful spell as Cardiff boss in 2014 and also managed United's reserve side from 2008-11. Has been in charge of Molde in his native Norway since 2015.

Laurent Blanc 6-1
Backed into odds-on favouritism by Tuesday lunchtime before drifting after money came for Solskjaer, the former United centre-half has not managed any team since parting company with Paris St-Germain in the summer of 2016. The Frenchman, who finished his long career at Old Trafford, won three consecutive Ligue 1 titles at the helm of the Parisian giants but turning around United's fortunes will be a trickier task.

Zinedine Zidane 7-1
Zidane left Real Madrid on his own terms at the end of last season after leading Los Blancos to three straight Champions League victories. Zidane was the early favourite but support for Blanc has seen him drift. He would be a popular choice with supporters.

Mauricio Pochettino 20-1
The Argentinian is unlikely to leave Tottenham and United will have to pay a big price if they are able to prise him away from the London club. He has plenty of Premier League experience under his belt with Southampton and Spurs but availability is set to prove a major stumbling block.

Michael Carrick 25-1
Carrick has been handed the interim job but United are set to appoint a caretaker manager for the rest of the season and the popular former Red Devils midfielder may not fit the bill.

Ryan Giggs 25-1
Wales boss took interim charge at Old Trafford after David Moyes was sacked in 2014 but has no other experience of club management and, despite his universal popularity in the red half of Manchester, is an unlikely choice.
