Match preview

Heung-Min Son often rises to the occasion when Tottenham talisman Harry Kane is out of the equation and he looks a likely match-winner when Spurs host Southampton in their FA Cup fourth-round replay.

The fixture shortens the scheduled winter break for both clubs but neither are likely to make wholesale changes.

A home tie with Norwich awaits the winners, who would be strong favourites to reach the quarter-finals.

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl gave opportunities to a few youngsters for the third-round tie at home to Huddersfield and his gamble paid dividends with goals from 19-year-olds Will Smallbone and Sam Vokins clinching a 2-0 victory.

However, he reverted to a senior line-up for the 1-1 draw at home to Spurs and will probably go strong once again as he bids to be the first manager to lead Southampton to an FA Cup final since Gordon Strachan in 2003.

Tottenham have not been to the final since 1991 and are desperate for a return, something not lost on Jose Mourinho, who is always hungry for silverware anyway.

Mourinho mentioned that his team are disadvantaged by having one day less to prepare and may consider a few changes simply to freshen up his side.

However, he has little scope to rotate in the attacking positions and looks likely to select Son, who produced a typically energetic performance in Sunday's 2-0 success at home to Manchester City.

The South Korean had a patchy opening half to the season and blew hot and cold in the first month under Mourinho, delivering an outstanding goal in a 5-0 success at home to Burnley and getting himself sent off in a 2-0 loss to Chelsea.

Son has a history of playing well when Kane is ruled out and came to the fore recently with goals in successive home games against Norwich and City as well as the original tie at Southampton.

Mourinho has been using Lucas Moura through the middle, allowing Son to play from a wider position, where he is more effective.

Son's superb finish gave Tottenham the upper hand at St Mary's and he looks the main threat in the return game.

Southampton may struggle to keep a clean sheet but have a good chance of doing some damage at the other end.

They had scored in nine consecutive matches until Saturday's 4-0 loss to Liverpool, which was more competitive than the score suggests.

The Saints are likely to give a good account of themselves but have an unsuccessful recent history away to Spurs, losing on eight of their last nine visits.

Key stat

Heung-Min Son has scored in his last three appearances.
