Sligo Rovers boss John Russell described his side's Europa Conference League qualifying first-leg win over Motherwell as one of the biggest results in the club's history and they can keep things tight in the return leg at the Showgrounds.

League of Ireland side Sligo beat Motherwell 1-0 in the first leg at Fir Park, capitalising on a defensive blip from Bevis Mugabi in the first half.

But they also had a couple of opportunities to double their lead after the break in that contest and the result has cranked up the pressure on Motherwell manager Graham Alexander.

The second leg is sure to be a nervy affair with the tie still evenly poised.

Sligo have lost only seven games in the league this season and can keep the scores level, at least until the interval, against a Well side who have not led at half-time in any of their last 21 competitive away matches.

The second qualifying-round tie between Welsh club Newtown and Spartak Trnava is not so balanced with the Slovakians having established a 4-1 lead in the first leg.

Trnava have started their league campaign with a win and a defeat but even in their loss against Banska Bystrica, they won the shot count 19-4 and conceded a late penalty. They are a far superior side to Newtown and can win again in 90 minutes.
